BLOCK BLAST 2011

The rains never came to W75BA's annual street fair on September 24, but the people did. Volunteers John Casey, Barbara Woods, and.Harriet Hochberg were joined by resident and NY1 newsman Pat Kiernan (center) and Alan Ando of Eastern Mountain Sports (right). Looking West from Broadway, with W75BA Café on the left.
Music was by the Narwals, enjoyed by a happy audience. Lead singer with the band, who brought more than one songster.
There was dancing on the street — even the kids joined in, taking turns with the grown-ups. Debra Escort of Project FIND (cemter) which brought ballroom dancers
Food for our buffet was generously given by Pappardella Restaurant, Viand Café. and West Side Market. We introduced table seating at W75BA Café. CLEAR internet and phone service Kids loved having their faces painted.
Webmaster Mary Ratcliffe and Sheila Hyne were resident vendors. Rummage tables attracted shoppers. One person's disposable is someone else's treasure, and it's an opportunity to clean house.
A happy camper clambers up to join other kids in the always-popular Bouncy Castle. W75BA treasurer Liz DeVito did a stint at the welcome table. Harriet Hochberg stopped to chat with the Zipcar representative, and ever-busy W75BA President Dee Rieber rested briefly on the snazzy red Zipcar.

Hamilton Fountain at Riverside Drive and West 75th Street

This ornate, baroque-styled marble fountain is named for Robert Ray Hamilton (1851-1890) a prominent businessman, land owner and politician who bequeathed $9,000 to the City for its creation and installation. It is one of the finest and last surviving examples of the decorative horse troughs that once dotted the cityscape.

28th National Night Out Against Crime
Tuesday. August 2, Verdi Square

W75BA again participated in National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2010. NNO is designed to —

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

May 14, Planting Day

What a difference a tree guard makes to the beauty of our blocks! Big thanks to volunteers, Anne Cunnigham who signed up five new members on the block, Patience Freeman, and Dan Rieber for all their hard work on Saturday, May 14! This year we were very fortunate to have partnered with Curb Allure, (www.curballure.com) thanks to the referral of member Scot Steinberg.

Curb Allure’s interconnecting system of aluminium posts, rails, panels, and accessories can be used to create customized or classic tree and garden guards. With their combination of patents-pending design, rust-resistant powder coating, easily replaceable parts, and tamper-proof screws, the guards are extremely secure and durable, and can withstand the challenges of an urban environment.

Green Initiatives 2008
Park West Block

On June 1, W75BA was out in full force to make our block a greener, more beautiful and healthier place to live! Block Association volunteers planted some forlorn tree beds on the Park West block (W75BA brought plants, gardening gloves, tools) and welcomed new members to the Association from our newest "member" block. Here are some photos from the event (and be on the lookout for more to come!).

Well ahead of the scheduled June 1 tree bed planting effort, residents of the W75BA Park West block had beautified their street! They certainly set a very fine example of ways to make the entire street more beautiful and welcoming. (Click on thumbnails to enlarge photos.)
